iTunes Backup File Information
Photos are stored within the iTunes Backup folder which is created when the device syncs with the computer. These backup files have long, unreadable names (such as ‘657dfsr4567df08ffd599′) and have no file extension appended. The data within these backup files is updated every time the device is connected to the computer as the first step of the iTunes sync process.
Besides photos, the backup files actually contain all personal data held on the device as well as the phone’s settings, app data and app organization. All media content is also saved within this folder.
iTunes backups are stored in different locations depending on Operating System:
To locate your Backup files access one of the folders below:
Windows Vista/7/8: \Users\*Username*\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\*Username*\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Restoring iPhone and iPad Photos
The files located in the iTunes Backup folder were not designed to be human readable files. Instead, their only purpose is to store information which can be automatically restored on the device via iTunes. Because of this, the backup data is stored in a way that makes it extremely difficult to read and recover without dedicated tools.
